Background
The beer garden
outside the Harts Bar is an area where, if the weather permits, lots of
students congregate and enjoy a beer (or two). However, aesthetically
speaking, it leaves a lot to be desired. The idea is to paint the two walls
above white, and then use this space as an area dedicated to temporary
murals (probably lasting one semester). The possibility of painting a mural
is open to anyone who submits a suggestion and is accepted. Thus the area
will become more pleasant to relax in and, through virtue of potential
participation, will also become an area over which the students have an
increased level of ownership.
Proposal
Looking at the wall and wondering how best to fill the space, and use the
act as a way of advertising to other students that they could also use this
space for self- expression, we decided to develop the mural over a series of
nights to make it into an event itself. The idea is to use a simple and
effective technique to demystify the mural. In this case we decided to use
stencils.
In terms of subject we thought we would, over a period of five days, cover
the wall with ants. Ideally the total number of ants at the end of the mural
would be equivalent to the total number of students at Oxford Brookes
(approximately 18,000). 2 people using stencils and spray cans would have to
spray roughly 2,000 a day, which is feasible.
Sketches
These rough sketches hope to give some kind of an indication of how the
design will develop. The idea is also to film the process with time-lapse
photography so the painters and other students will also appear to be
somewhat ant-like in their movements. The film would be used as promotional
material to encourage other students to have a go at the mural. [Project
