Music Machines

During the Winter and Spring of 2007-08. Orinoco worked with Oliver Wright, a student from Ruskin College on a work placement, to look at ideas for making musical instruments from waste materials. Oliver's sketchbook of ideas and plans is now available as a PDF to download. [Oliver's Sketchbook]

1. The Thump-a-Phone

This is an arrangement of large cardboard tubes (the kind that carpets and big rolls of fabric come wrapped around.

The instrument is tuned by cutting the tubes to different lengths and played by striking the end of the tube with a foam paddle (made from a flexible plastic tube and a sticky foam pad).

Thump-a-Phones can be built in situ or mounted on a trolley for transportability. Simple.
