[Orinoco] A clarification and an apology.

Dear Orinoco members and supporters

Please accept my apologies for the recent problems with the Orinoco mailing
list. After nearly five glitch free years I accidentally changed a setting
on the mailing list from 'reply to sender' to 'reply to all'. This meant
that people who replied to Jon's last email from the store had their reply
sent to everyone.

I'm really sorry about this but I can assure you that personal details are,
and have always been, entirely safe. None of the people whom you have
received emails from know your email address.

The change from the old system (emails produced from the membership database
directly) to the new system of an automatic list was made precisely so that
your personal details would be safer than they were under the old system.
Under the old system, in order to send an email to the members one had to
have a copy of the membership database. This limited access as you can
imagine as holding a copy of the Orinoco database is something that only
CRB-checked staff or volunteers can be allowed to do. We needed to allow key
volunteers to be able to update the members with news of what was happening
at Orinoco without ever knowing their personal details. This makes the
vetting procedure an editorial, rather than a data protection issue and
makes life easier.

So, once again, sorry for the annoyance, it won't happen again and your
personal details are safe.
