Another Rubbish Idea from Orinoco
[View Launch Photos]
Orinoco, the Oxfordshire Scrapstore launches Re-Connect, a fun modelling
kit made entirely from rubbish.
Television presenter and environmental campaigner Howie Watkins (BBC -
Really Wild Show, BBC - Science in Action...) will be talking to and working
with children in Year three at St. Andrew's C of E Primary (London Road,
Headington, opp. Burry Knowle Park) on Thursday (04/04/06) afternoon. Photo
call 2pm of Howie and children (parental consent to photograph obtained).
Howie said, “Each Re-Connect kit contains a collection of bendy straws and
connectors in an old shoebox. The straws and connecters can be used to build
geometric shapes, structures, models, crazy creatures... You’re only limited
by your imagination.”
Howie has been working as a volunteer with Orinoco to develop new products
and initiatives. This is, he hopes, the first in a number of new initiatives
that will increase the number of users of the Headington-based store.
Re-Connect is available from the Orinoco shop in the Bullingdon Community
Centre, Peat Moors Road (off the Slade), Headington, Oxford. OX3 7HS.
The shop is open on Saturdays from 11am to 4pm. Find out more by visiting
the website: www.oxorinoco.org
Howie has borrowed a trick from Easyjet entrepreneur, Stelios, “We’ve only
got enough straws to make 200 kits so the first 100 will be £5, the next 50
will be £7.50 and the last 50 will be £10. Hurry along to grab a bargain box
at the best price.”
All the parts used in Re-Connect are oddments and leftovers from modelling
kits made by Cochranes of Oxford Ltd. who specialise in educational games
and teaching aids for families, schools and universities. Check out their
range of excellent “Construct-o-Straw” kits at:
www.cochranes.co.uk.
Orinoco collects suitable waste materials from businesses across Oxfordshire
and diverts them from landfill to create innovative playthings and art
supplies. This saves money and reduces the amount of waste going to
landfill.
