It's SWAP SHOP Saturday

The next Orinoco Swap Shop will be this Saturday (May 10th) from 11am to 4pm. Come along and dump stuff you no longer want or take away stuff you fancy. There is no need to actually Swap things as the name would suggest [don't get me started on that one - Howie]. [more info] [download flier]

Fashion Still on Sale

We sold 90% of or fabulous knitwear and linens from FLAX and Margaret White of Burford on our Fashion Sale Saturday. We asked £2 for each item (that was 99% off for some of the clothes) and still raised £900. There's still one rail of nice clothes left so if you missed the fashion sale you haven't missed out on a fashionable bargain.

Book Covering Paper, Fabric & Vinyl

The lovely book covering paper is back in stock. Great for origami, scrap booking, as a backing for displays or... as a book covering material.

Cowley Road Carnival 2008 - Sunday 6th July

This year's Carnival will be on Sunday the 6th of July. This year's theme is 'masquerade'. We're going to be there in a special Orinoco marquee in Circus street (the City end of the street by St. Clements) and we'll running free mask-making activities all day long. We're also going to be making masks at the store on the preceding two Saturdays (28th June and 5th July). Please get in touch if you can help out with the activities at Orinoco or on the day of the Carnival.

Old Bicycle Inner Tubes

The good people at Oxford Cycle Workshop keep offering us old bicycle inner tubes. Howie has been politely refusing their kind offers pending convincing proof that we can make use of hundreds of old inner tubes. This proof has now been furnished. Inner tubes will now be made available so get to the scrapstore and buy as many as you can carry before they go out of fashion. When you get home, check out www.instructables.com to find out what to do next.

If you've never been to the Instructables website, this is a good excuse. In addition to the excellent article on 1000 uses for an old inner tube there are articles on how to knit a tardis, build a docking station for your iPod out of the box it came in, screen print with waste materials, etc.

Little Boxes

Good News and Bad News

One of the most recycled products is cardboard. This is good news but it means that getting hold of big sheets of nice waste cardboard to build things out of is getting harder and harder.

Here is a compromise. Buy a recycled cardboard foldaway playhouse. These houses are paint-it-yourself and are immensely good fun. They cost £11.12 including VAT (£18.11 including VAT and delivery) from The Packaging Store.

You can also buy a variety of boxes and other packaging supplies in the store.
